Weekend Party Preview: Beats from Brazil, the UK, & Our Dark Past
Friday, April 9
What: Joker, Nomad, Jazzsteppa, DJ Dials, B. Bravo, Shlohmo, and more
Where: 103 Harriet
When: 10:00 p.m. - 5:00 a.m.
Why: One of the more lauded names in the ever-growing and overcrowded dubstep scene is the UK's Joker. The producer has garnered attention from Pitchfork, XLR8R, and a plethora of UK music rags due to his heavily R&B-inspired, fresh take on the genre. After canceling their last performance in SF, Joker and his buddy Nomad will certainly have their crowd ready for them. Locals Shlohmo, DJ Dials, B. Bravo and more will be representing SF throughout the night. B. Bravo told us why he's excited for the gig: "[The] UK is killing it right now, with Joker at the top of the list, and is always a step ahead in terms of dance music and club culture." We couldn't agree more.
What: Gui Boratto and Nikola Baytala
When: 10:00 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Why: Brazilian minimal techno producer Gui Boratto brings his hypnotic melodies and rhythms stateside for this live performance at Mighty. The artist's latest album for the longstanding Kompakt label, Take My Breath Away, came out over a year ago now, yet the music remains as immersive as ever. Before you get lost in Gui's soundscapes, SF DJ (and member of the local techno-obsessed Kontrol collective) Nikola Baytala will be dishing out the deep grooves to get you warmed up for the live show.
