Tobacco

Tobacco, the faceless frontman for hazy electronic psych-pop outfit Black Moth Super Rainbow, is giving the world another slice off his next solo record, Maniac Meat. The prolific producer has already shared the distorted old-school hip-hop beats of "Sweatmother," and now we're treated to one of two collaborations the Pennsylvania-based artist did with weirdo pop star Beck.

"Fresh Hex" initially fits easily into Black Moth's or Tobacco's repertoire, with similar synth, vocoder, and drum sounds. However, once vocals are introduced to the mix, Beck's instantly-recognizable cadence claims the song as its own. Even the chopped and screwed delivery of his stream of conscious verses--thrown between a host of synths and sound effects--doesn't alter the vocal's lasting effect.

"Fresh Hex" may be a track produced by and for Tobacco, but the pop star's voice sounds so at home in its white-boy analog freakout embrace, the song could easily be mistaken for a b-side from a lost Beck album.
