Better Than: Watching the Olympics, if the Olympics had a category for "Live Performance."

The Avett Brothers are MVPs of live performance. Which means the hardcore crowd who helped sell out the North Carolina boys' show at the Fox last night had some high expectations for delivery on that showmanship. Luckily for the band, the audience poured out of the theater at the end of the night gushing about the concert. One of the more common sentiments I overheard: "I thought it was going to be a good show ... but man ... that was so good!"

The brothers, Scott and Seth Avett, earn those accolades in part by singing with an unparalleled forcefulness, belting out lyrics like their mics just won't cut it. Their delivery can sound harsh and unpolished at times, especially on studio albums. But they can switch to a softer, more melodic style as well. The intensity and dynamics of the vocals contribute to the high-octane energy of the live gig.

The band members also perform with their entire bodies. At the Fox, they never stopped moving. Cellist Joe Kwon played with his eyes closed and hair whipping around his face as he hopped around the stage. Meanwhile, Seth Avett jumped from one foot to another, strumming and picking at his guitar in mid-air. The musicians played tirelessly like this for nearly two hours.
