Video of the Day: Ty Segall + Mikal Cronin = Badasses in Black
Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin "I Wear Black" from Claire Marie Films on Vimeo.
In person, Ty Segall comes off like a sweet guy. At last weekend's sardine-packed ruckus at the Elbo Room, the garage rocker beamed out at a sea of happy punks and seemed genuinely giddy as a little kid when he said, "This is pretty fun." But the dude has a badass side--or, at least, one that comes out when he's teamed up with Mikal Cronin.
The killer song the pair recorded together, "I Wear Black," is on heavy rotation in my head for making simple delinquency sound so cool. But watching the video they shot for the single takes my enthusiasm to a whole new level. Here, Segall and Cronin are tough guys with a goofy underbelly--flipping off kids in shark costumes, shotgunning Mountain Dew, slap-fighting one another, and spitting up lots of cherry Slurpee-colored blood. Black is the new bruiser rock.
