Track of the Day: Surf City, A Post-SXSW Favorite

Categories: MP3 of the Day

Now that I'm back in San Francisco, thinking about just one band at a time, I plan on spending the week re-highlighting my favorite acts from the big SXSW weekend. I heard some truly awesome music that I'd hate to see buried in a deluge of Austin wrap-up posts.

Surf City topped my list of new discoveries. I'd never heard of the New Zealand group before I set foot in a bar called Friends (awww) Thursday night, and these dudes blew me away live. (MTV's New Zealand operation noted my enthusiasm for their boys online). Surf City's self-titled EP has remained on repeat on my iPod since I downloaded it last night.

The group names its songs like a smartass hardcore band, but the music is ecstatic, noisy pop, taking the jangly indie aesthetic of its fellow countrymen like the Clean and revving the pace to spastic. The single that really made the band new buddies at the Friends show was "Dickshakers Union," though, which even now makes me kinda want to punch the sky (download it free here thanks to RCRDLBL). "Records of a Flagpole Skater" (which I posted the video for above) is another good one, reminding  me of Galaxie 500 if those guys had snapped awake one Friday night and penned a perfect party anthem.
