SXSW Friday PM: Village Voice Day Party w/ Surfer Blood, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Superchunk, The xx
The group was on the earnest side of the party lineup, seeming genuinely excited that people had arrived there to see them, and spilling the secret that their young skin is still pretty thin. The song "Take It Easy" was prefaced with a little explanation: "This next song is about how sensitive we are to criticism." Considering the texting-to-watching-the-band ratio remained impressively low during their set, however, it seemed Surfer Blood were performing for fans there to support their ascent, rather than give them another reason to write about bleeding from a critic's pen. And considering that the club was packed to capacity for their performance--and remained there throughout the day--further showed these guys are on a pretty rapid rise.
