SF's Veil Veil Vanish Celebrate CD Release at Popscene

If your band traffics in '80s-indebted post-punk, it doesn't get much better than receiving a thumbs up from goth's godfather. That's what happened when local quintet Veil Veil Vanish contributed a cover of "The Upstairs Room" to the 2008 Cure tribute record Perfect As Cats.

"We chose 'The Upstairs Room' because, while an amazing song in its original form, being a B-side it felt slightly unfinished. There was a lot of room to play with and add to it," says bassist Amy Rosenoff. "Soon after its release, [label] Manimal called us up to say that Robert Smith had contacted them and really liked our cover."

Happy with how the song turned out, Veil Veil Vanish decided to continue working with producer ATOM (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Cribs, Maxïmo Park) on its debut album, Change In The Neon Light. The band recorded a concept album tied together with a dramatic mix of dark vocals, guitars, and synths.

"The idea comes from living in a city and watching things deteriorate around you," says frontman Keven Tecon. "The dwindling of artistic inspiration, as people can no longer afford the time or money to do anything other than work and pay bills. The decayed sense of decadence that has moved far beyond the point of enjoyment. Yet from this comes a change that is overdue and needed in order to start a new status quo that is vibrant and refreshing."
