Tegan and Sara
Just out, in this week's music section...

Tegan and Sara's Sara Quin on being inspired by Leonard Cohen's romantic frustrations: "Tegan ended up getting what she wanted and what she was practicing good for," Sara says. "I didn't. What was so attractive to me about [Cohen's] 'Came So Far for Beauty' is that in his pursuit, she didn't reciprocate, and it didn't matter that he had devoted himself.

New local grrrl-group The Splinters: "It's easy to picture Oakland foursome the Splinters as a gang of boisterous broads out to fuck shit up. The band's anthem, a fist-pounding riot called 'Splintered Bridges,' proclaims, 'We will walk over splintered bridges and burn them behind us/We will break off door hinges and shut 'em when we leave.'"

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum violinist  Carla Kihlstedt shows off her skills as a high-concept composer at Other Minds Festival.

Also: Galactic funks up the jam-band scene, Shrinebuilder crafts a skull-crushing doom supergroup, and Shackleton brings "buzzy synths, bruising bass, and his spare, hypnotic style" to the dancefloor.
