Hear MGMT's Second Album Streaming Online

Categories: Music

MGMT's last break-out single, "Kids," inspired the kind of ecstatic love usually reserved for prepackaged boy bands or massive pop stars. The group's popularity increased as its 2008 album Oracular Spectacular climbed up best-of lists--and music charts--worldwide. So it's an understatement to say the Brooklyn outfit's second effort has been eagerly anticipated. Starting today, fans can whet their appetites for psychedelic space-pop with the streaming version of MGMT's second album, Congratulations, on NPR's Web site.

The band posted the new record online in response to a recent Congratulations leak. MGMT states on its Web site that it wanted to offer the songs for free download, but couldn't for obvious reasons. Regardless, the public is welcome to work its way through the record's nine epic glam-rock numbers--just don't expect any instant hits here. MGMT opted out of sharing the usual album-boosting single, and instead "encourage both listeners and radio stations to play the songs that jump out at them."

It's difficult to pick out the next "Kids," "Time to Pretend," or my personal favorite "Electric Feel," but we aren't left without options here. The schizophrenic "Flash Delirium" has already been making the Internet rounds, and quick listens to the anthemic "I Found a Whistle" or album opener "It's Working" reveal some choice sing-a-long radio and remix fodder. Check out Congratulations yourself, and choose your own adventurous single.
