10 Things to Do This Weekend For Under $10

If you couldn't tell from this week's photo, we're ready for a vacation. A little sunshine, or some neon panties -- you know, it doesn't take much to leave the work week behind. This week's list is jammed with new gallery parties, old-soul drone, and eye candy for acid casualties of all ages. Behold this week's cheapskate options for a trip around the city. Feel free to add your suggestions in the comments section below -- especially, you know, if you look really hot in a bunny mask.

Barn Owl @ The Hemlock (Fri.)
If you dig the drone, head over to the Hemlock tonight, where local act Barn Owl composes drifting soundscapes that slow metal and melody down to a glacial pace. The group is a sonic descendant of Earth, Dylan Carlson's groundbreaking Olympia act that found meditative qualities in maximizing the intensity of each chord. For a little taste of what Barn Owl sounds like, tune into KUSF this morning at 11 a.m., when the duo is sure to play some really pretty tunes with Friday morning DJ Irwin. We can't wait for that show. The nighttime gig starts at 9:30 p.m. ($7).

Alice in Wonderland in 3-D @Castro Theater (Fri.-Sun.)
Director Tim Burton created the latest twist on the Alice in Wonderland classic, this version coming at you in 3-D (stoner alert) and starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Regular Castro Theater showtimes will put you back $10 a pop, but get an early 1 p.m. matinee in (cheap stoner alert) and the price drops to $7.50. Of course, you could see it on a bigger screen somewhere else in town, but we guarantee it won't be half as fun. (Does the AMC Van Ness have an organist? Didn't think so.)

Operation Restore Defenestration @ 1AM Gallery (Fri.)
"For new residents, it takes a while to see Defenestration on Sixth Street, because there are so many interesting things to look at. It's is Brian Goggin's contribution to the skyline and lately the piece has been making news. The San Francisco Redevelopment Agency has allowed the work to remain up as long as the building does, so long as Goggin restores it -- Defenestration was meant to last one year, and it's been 13. The Black Rock Arts Foundation has stepped in to help, and hopes to raise $75,000. The exhibit "Operation Restore Defenestration" is their first major effort. Tonight's fundraiser (which has free admission) is a chance to meet the artist and Defenestration volunteers, all of whom are dedicated to keeping the Sixth Street skyline as twisted as the parade below. An opening reception starts at 6 p.m. at 1AM Gallery." --Michael Leaverton

Is there a better way to blow off a little stress than singing along to dysfunctional love songs professed by a punk rocker in a grungy old bunny mask? Nobunny has promised to quit the game in the past, but somehow he's stayed ... energized, as it were. It's probably the spastic pace of his rambunctious garage punk that keeps him going. Tonight be brings his rabbit ears to Thee Parkside alongside TV Ghost, the Outdoorsmen, and a band titled, simply, Mom. "Motorhead with [Nobunny]" tonight at Thee Parkside, when the show starts at 9 p.m. ($8)

Haight Street Art Walk (Fri.)
From the the sounds of things, this little art walk is an excuse to get you to pop into the retail outlets dotting Upper Haight. But among the list of happy hours disguised as shopping trips, RVCA is hosting some sorta live music, which is bound to be good, and their gallery always hosts great art. For the big readers out there, Booksmith is having a book swap from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. But basically look for little surprises at various shops between 5 and 9 p.m.
