Benefit for Haiti: T.I.T.S., Eats Tapes, Houndsound, C.L.A.W.S., Kit Clayton, Sutekh @ Elbo Room
Usually when claws and tits mix together, the result is something that requires emergency surgery. But the acronymic monikers of local scenemakers C.L.A.W.S. and T.I.T.S. represent little more than assembled letters -- something like the punctuational inverse of disemvoweled hipster band names such as MSTRKRFT or MGMT. Thus tonight's biggest conflict is probably the contrast between T.I.T.S.'s brittle post-punk and C.L.A.W.S.'s wetter-sounding DJ indietronix. The former's slicing, treble-centric guitars recall no wave bands like Ut or the Bush Tetras after an intentional funkectomy, with rhythms so sparse they practically dare you to dance. The latter, meanwhile, favors a much more danceable combination of retro-tech synths and splashy snare hits, working in a 16-bit electronic genre that could be classified as IDM (provided that term stands for "Intellivision Dance Music"). If that's your thing, then the presence of similarly-minded Eats Tapes on the bill should make you quite content to spend some bucks at this Haiti benefit gig at Elbo Room. Or perhaps your broke ass might feel better about spending the money if you referred to it as M.O.N.E.Y. instead?
