The Thrashers: Local Fourth Graders Rock Past Curfew

One problem faces The Thrashers at the band's CD release party on Friday, Feb. 26, at Broadway Studios.

"The show starts at 8 and we go on at 9:45," says keyboardist Brandon Lurie, "and that's past our bedtimes."

"Not on Fridays," counters rhythm guitarist Charley Rutledge.

Not many bands have to go back to grade school on Monday morning, but the Thrashers are all nine years old. They may be too young to shave, but the group has been together since the members were in the second grade, two years ago.

The Thrashers are in the garage of a two-story family home in Pacifica. Bassist Nick Rigling throws a drumstick at his twin brother Chris, drummer for the Thrashers, and hits him in the head. The drummer begins to cry. Their mother, self-described "Rocker Mom" Karen Gonzalez, steps in. "There's only two more songs left," she says. "You can get through them."
