That's My Jam! Lagartijeando Remixes Poirier for the Global Dancefloor

International riddims have grown increasingly popular in Western music as of late. The consistent rise of electronic dance music throughout North America (and particularly the rise of electro and bass music) has come with a parallel uptick in interest for dancehall, cumbia, and kuduro, which are being employed by DJs and producers around the word to make you get down.

One such producer, Montreal's Poirier (a.k.a. Ghislain Poirier), has utilized global elements in his upbeat dance tunes for almost 10 years, more recently on his 2007 album No Ground Under and on the slew of EPs and singles that have followed. Recently, Argentina's Lagartijeando took a stab at remixing Poirier's "Kalima Shop Titi feat. Boogat," from his recently released Las Americas V.1 EP, with fiery results.

Poirier's fellow Canadian, MC Boogat, takes the vocals on the track--although if you don't speak Spanish, he could be singing about puppies and lollipops for all you'd know. His vocal work sounds especially dirty amongst Lagartijeando's dense electro timbres and bouncing reggaeton beat, not to mention the stabbing, hyper-active synth melodies and woozy soundscapes floating in the background. Lagartijeando's disparate, tweaked elements come together perfectly on a single that could just as easily soundtrack a raucous weekend in Mission bars as it could an all-night, outdoor dance party in Buenos Aires. It's crank-it-loud, sweat-inducing proof that co-opting another culture can sometimes be used for good.
