Not that we're complaining, but the annual Noise Pop festival, which officially kicks off tonight, brings good bands to a city that sees a quite a few good bands on a regular basis. Perhaps a more unique contribution is the promoters' keen curatorial eye: See, among many suitable examples, the like-whoa lineup at Great American Music Hall Friday night.

Weirdo genius Bradford Cox (as Atlas Sound) headlines--but the bill's special sauce seeps all the way down to openers Nice Nice, an electro-psychedelic Portland duo definitely worth showing up early for. Nice Nice's music builds knotty synth lines and fuzzy guitars into electronic soundscapes that propel the songs forward over tribal beats. The group's intricate rhythms are constant, but subtly evolving -- think Konono No. 1 as the rhythm section for an electronic Comets on Fire. Distant vocals appear occasionally, but noise and movement get the focus and deserve it.

Signed last year to Warp records, Nice Nice has three songs available for free download now and a debut full-length due in April. Arrive early Friday and you'll have been there when.
