What To Do? Thursday's Pick: The Black Lips

The Black Lips have succeeded in making music that revels in the simple, brash effrontery afforded by guitars, drums, and volume. Think of it as platonic rock 'n' roll. What makes it work so well is that it all feels so unintentional. Where a lesser band would couch such atavistic music in knowing irony, Black Lips play it straight. Nobunny takes the throwback attitude a step farther, stomping through truly elemental pop-punk cacophony while adorned in the world's most disturbing anthropomorphic Halloween costume.
The Black Lips and Nobunny play tonight at Great American Music Hall with Personal & the Pizzas (see All Shook Down's new column, Openers, for more on that last band). 9 p.m., $15.
