Andrew Jackson Jihad @ Bottom of the Hill

"Rejoice!" proclaims Andrew Jackson Jihad singer and guitarist Sean Bonnette in the opener of 2007's People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World. In his impishly imperfect voice, he repeats his mantra before each verse, reminding you why now is a time to celebrate: "This world will tear you to shreds," "The bed you sleep in is burning," "The sky is fucking falling," etc. Point being: "Rejoice, you'll never make it out alive." Filled with imagery so awful it's funny, "Rejoice" inverts fire and brimstone ideology by relishing life's terrors. Bonnette and bassist Ben Gallaty's caustic, tongue-in-cheek take on folk-punk serves an excellent antithesis to their often overly righteous DIY brethren. Elsewhere, on "Brave as a Noun," the Phoenix duo crafts another upbeat dirge, ominously declaring, "It's sad to know that there's no honest way out." When Armageddon arrives, AJJ will be smirking.

The band plays tonight at Bottom of the Hill. (8:30 p.m., $10)
