Track of the Day: Pantha Du Prince

Anyone who has guests Noah Lennox of Animal Collective and Tyler Pope of !!! and LCD Soundsystem on an album is worth a listen. But even without the indie extras, Pantha Du Prince weaves a beautifully complicated web for the ears.

Hendrik Weber, a Paris- and Berlin-based DJ and producer who goes by the Pantha moniker, named his upcoming record Black Noise. It's a reference to the opposite of white noise--the sounds that are underheard rather than the ubiquitous noise we can easily block out. To that end, Pantha crafts minimal techno landscapes overlaid with icy strings, delicate chimes, and field recordings from the Swiss Alps (one track has a beat that sounds like footsteps crunching in snow). He claims this sonic vision "burrows through the acoustic debris," and his buried treasures will become ours when Black Noise is released Feb. 9 on Rough Trade.

For now, check out "The Splendour." It's a song that riles the imagination with slowly percolating melodies and beats that could be ping-pong balls bouncing off walls, for all we know of the black noises that went into the track.
