Track of the Day: Carlton Melton Gets Stony in the Dome

Categories: MP3 of the Day

I spent the holidays getting my rural hippie on, traveling from the Oregon mountains for Christmas and then down to Big Sur for New Years. So it was only fitting that when forced to return to reality, I'd spend my final night of freedom from the 9 to 5 leaving the planet behind completely. I'm talking about the experience of listening to a little slab of vinyl recorded in Mendocino by the band Carlton Melton. The four-piece, which includes two former members of Zen Guerrilla, is a purveyor of "dome rock." That means they built this giant dome up there in weed country, and then wrote and recorded music inside it. The result is a spacey, spiritual, stony mix of instrumentals. Check out the tune "Found Children" here.

If you like what you hear, Carlton Melton melts heads Wednesday night at the Hemlock.
