The Big Up Magazine subscription party at Jon Holliday's Red Sky Records store was part intimate house party with friends and strangers mingling and part warehouse rave with DJs stationed in the basement and upstairs room of the three-floor space on 7th Street in SOMA. Promised a free magazine subscription with entry, people arrived in twos and threes to hear headliners OSC in the intimate dubstep basement chamber and Alland Byallo in the techno loft. The attendees ranged from dreadlocked and bearded neo-tribalists to H&M-clad 20-something creatives mostly chatting about this-or-that new track, or someone's recent DJ tour.
By 11 p.m. downstairs was beginning to fill up as Surefire Productions/Brap Dem Records representative Sam Supa - the closest thing SF has to a dubstep ambassador - was warming it up with an array of bass-heavy tracks. Setting aside his $2 Miller Light tallboy, Supa went across the board, playing hyper, pile-driving bass-soaked tunes and more spacious plates from London's Digital Mystikz. Later he said that he acquired the majority of his set from producer friends in recent days and even hours before the gig. Talk about instant gratification!

Upstairs, it was warm minimal techno and percussion-heavy deep house sewn together nicely by Red Sky's own Jon Holliday, Planet E's Keith Kemp and local-turned-international headliner Alland Byallo from local night [Kontrol]. As a de facto chill-out room with leather coaches and lounging couples, the atmosphere was great and the music sublime.
