Categories: Q&A

DJ Sam Supa wears many hats. That one you see there in that photo? That's just the one he wears for eating cereal. He has many other guises as he digs around San Francisco's deep bass scene: Supa co-founded Surefire Productions, he runs Brap Dem! Recordings, and he's a resident DJ at a couple well-respected clubs around town. How does it do it? The dude seems to thrive on being a new sound explorer. In the below Q&A, Supa advises folks to regularly try out new clubs, new scenes, and new styles. Great advice, and there's more where that came from...

So what's your story, in 100 words or less? I've always been a music lover. I was in a hardcore/grind metal band in high school. One day, no one showed for practice. The next day I saw Aphex Twin at a party, and became a DJ a few days later.

What can you tell us about your record label? Brap Dem! Recordings started off as a night a few years back where the local glitch/ dubstep/ bassline DJs would come out on a Wednesday to play their tunes. We eventually did some one-offs. Last year there were tons of local tunes I was given, and I thought more people need to hear what we are doing in SF. With an encouraging push from buddy, I went ahead and got digital distro and now am working on vinyl distro--if not we will just do small runs of records. I just got so excited about all this sick bass music locally and internationally. Our second release by NTRLD comes out next week.

Name of a track you can't get out of your head: Nosaj Thing "Aquarium"
