A Christmas Memory @ Project Artaud Theater

"Which one of you is a drinking man?" is the best line in Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory. As presented by the Word for Word theater company, Capote's short story concerns a 7-year-old boy and his best friend, Sook, graying and "childlike." Critics have called it saccharine, and yes, any rapturous tale of making ginger-spiced, citron-studded fruitcake (shhh, no giggles) is going to sound soft compared to In Cold Blood. But the truth is, Capote's kid-friendly story is merely sweet, not saccharine, and very funny: David Sedaris learned a thing or two from this one. Its staging is bound to be interesting, since there's not much dialogue, but Word for Word lives up to its name, as always, with style and talent. And not all the whiskey went in the fruitcakes. ($10-$15, 7 p.m., Project Artaud Theater.)
