Local Grammy Nominees: Green Day, Metallica, Symphony, More

​For those who follow the Grammys, we have a couple locals in the running. Nominations were announced today, and the following Bay Area acts are up for little gold statues:

Green Day's "21 Guns" got a nod in two categories: "Best Rock Song" and "Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals," and the album 21st Century Breakdown was nominated for "Best Rock Album."

Metallica were nominated for for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for "The Unforgiven III," off 2009's Death Magnetic.

The slightly lesser known Quartet San Francisco got a nod for its QSF Plays Brubeck disc, up for "Best Classical Crossover CD of the Year" and "Best Engineered Album, Classical."

And Ledisi is up for "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" for "Goin' Through Changes" from  Turn Me Loose--the record that also earned her a nomination for "Best R&B Album" category.

The San Francisco Symphony is also up for a couple awards. It earned nominations for "Best Classical Album," "Best Choral Performance," and "Best Engineered Classical Album" for its live concert recording of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 and the Adagio from Symphony No. 10, which were conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas.

It's good to see some local acts in the mix, but overall the Grammys are, per usual, pretty much a yawn. All the expected names are up for awards (U2, Madonna, AC/DC, Dylan, Beyonce, etc. etc. etc.) with the only excitement being all the Lady Gaga nominations, and a couple deserving buzz bands (MGMT, Phoenix) slipping in there too.
