Hey DJ! Friday Q&A: Nicky B. of Gemini and Go BANG!

Categories: Q&A

Regardless of whether you over-indulged on turkey day, there's a place this weekend to work it off while you work it out. The city's beloved disco inferno, Go BANG! is celebrating one year of championing the diversity of sound and style in "70's/80's New York/Chicago/San Francisco nightlife." Helping the "fierce dancers and flashy dressers" boogie as one is resident DJ Nicky B., who also forces folks to break a sweat at his other club night, Gemini.

Go BANG!'s big bash is Saturday, Nov. 28, at Deco. Before you go burn off that extra stuffing, check out our little chat with Nicky--where he reveals, among other stories, the time his set was so hot he literally set his clothes on fire.

Name: Nick Barber, a.k.a. Nicky B.

Club night(s): My monthly gigs include Gemini, 1st Saturdays at Underground SF, and Go BANG!, 4th Saturdays at Deco Lounge.
Style(s) of music you spin: Disco, boogie, italo, most everything in between...

So what's your story, in 100 words or less?
Well, I began to really enjoy playing records at parties in both other people's houses and my own. Eventually, my friend Derek and I decided to throw a disco night, Gemini, and from there I came to accept the whole idea of DJing publicly. It's been just over three years since that revelation and things seem to be going alright.

Name of a track you can't get out of your head: I recently watched some footage from a 1981 Kraftwerk show and now I can't stop singing/humming "Computer Love."

Name of an artist you're currently championing in your DJ sets: I seem to be playing a lot of Leroy Burgess records lately.

Name of a current favorite track for the peak of your set: "Tell You Today" by Loose Joints is definitely a personal favorite.

Musical mantra:  Keep it funky.

Favorite DJ experience: I opened for a live disco band called Escort at Mezzanine a couple years ago; playing "San Francisco" by Village People to a packed dance floor going wild and everyone totally feeling it. Good times.

Worst request:
Can't remember the last time I had a request that wasn't the worst request ever.

Worst club faux pas you've committed: There's for sure been too many of these for me to consider them all, but most recently I was DJing at a small spot late at night and hadn't realized I had set my jacket down on an open lightbulb. About an hour or so into my set I smelled burning. Confused, I looked all over to figure out where the smell was coming from and finally found my jacket exactly where I had left it, literally on fire. It was ruined. I was pretty bummed.

Most treasured vinyl score:  All my Japanese hip-hop records from the late-'80s to mid-'90s. I've spent a lot of time and effort tracking that stuff down.

What other music-related projects are you currently working on? In addition to being a currently underutilized drummer, I "trifle on beats" under the name Nako. My music rests in the ghost town of Myspace.

What's something happening in the local music scene that should be getting more attention? The burgeoning gabber revival scene coming out of Visitacion Valley. No, but wouldn't that be cool?

What elements would your fantasy club night entail? There's a club in Spain that's seriously carved into the side of a cliff overlooking the sea. That sounds like a step in the right direction.

Question we didn't ask you but  you often ask yourself: Why, when solitude howling like the sea bestrode the gaudy lights of the eternal city, should one proceed to dance?

Next time we can see you spin: Saturday, November 28th is Go BANG!'s 1-Year Anniversary Party at Deco Lounge with guest Ken Vulsion (Honey Sound System). Then I spin next at Gemini with Derrick Love and guest Stanley Frank (Chilidog!) on Saturday, December 5th.
