Syko Sam: Why Satanic Rap is a Bad Idea

In a case seemingly out of "CSI" or "Law & Order: SVU," the Associated Press has reported that a Castro Valley rapper who called himself Syko Sam was arrested in Farmville, VA, charged with one count of murder, for killing a priest - a charge which could be expanded to four murders once the additional alleged victims are ID'd. Additionally, the Chronicle has further details, naming one of the alleged victims and detailing her doomed relationship with Syko Sam.

Chillingly, Syko Sam's My Space page seems to foreshadow his apparent wanton killing spree. "Welcome to the mind of Syko Sam," it announces, depicting a masked Sam holding an ax, as if about to swing. Even more disturbing is the rapper's bio. After stating he had only been rapping for a few months, he lists his motivation as an opportunity "to explore my creative side."

But how does a newfangled Caucasian horrorcore artist with a Satanic fixation from Castro Valley make it out to Farmville, Virginia anyway? Apparently, Syko Sam was invited by the eventual victims, female horrorcore fans who he may have met through MySpace. Intriguingly, Syko Sam's page listed no friends, and just four messages. The most recent, dated Aug 17, is by fellow horrorcore rapper "SickTanick," who addresses the friendless rapper as "killa," adding, "feel free to drop me a comment anytime, aint no rapstar bullshit here, get at me." Though references have been made in the press to songs with macabre titles such as "Murderous Rage," the rapper's MySpace page currently doesn't list any music, so it's hard to assess his worth as an artist, horrorcore or otherwise.

SickTanick's MySpace blog, however, contains an official statement revealing the incident took place shortly after the first annual Strictly For The Wicked Festival in Southgate, Michigan. In it, he refers to Syko Sam as "Sam McCrosky (AKA LilDemonDog)." Posted before the suspect's arrest, the blog reads, "all that we are able to disclose is that the suspect in question, murdered all four of the above mentioned individuals, shortly after arriving in Farmville Virginia."

A follow-up post responds to allegations of beef and "snitching." In a later addendum, SickTanick notes the genre has come under attack as well and says, "all people keep talking about is how much of a "snitch" i am, well you know what, FUCK YOU ALL."

Horrorcore made its biggest impact on hip-hop culture about ten or fifteen years ago, with Wu-Tang sub-sect The Gravediggaz (who were possibly tongue-in-cheek about the whole thing, considering their producer was Prince Paul) and the Dr. Dre-Ice Cube collabo "Natural Born Killers." Since then, the genre has become largely the province of alternative-leaning white MidEastern rappers like Detroit's Insane Clown Posse (with a few exceptions, like Detroit's Esham and Sacramento's C-Bo and Brotha Lynch Hung.) Given that, Syko Sam's suspected killing frenzy raises new questions - not about the link between violence and hardcore rap, but about the cultural appropriation of the genre by white Satanists. It's also another bad look for MySpace, which is getting a bad rep as a place where serial killers stalk victims online.
