I love the irony here ... The Presidio Trust is shutting down main roads, such as Presidio Blvd., for the month of October, to study possible ways of "calming" (reducing) traffic through the park, while opening a major tourist attraction at the same time.
As someone who commutes in to the Presidio every day, I find the logic behind this to be unfathomable.
Sure, get more tenants to rent space in the park, and then make it next to impossible for their employees or visitors to access it.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 24 2009 @ 1:15PMThe Museum will have admission only by timed-entry tickets, with a limited number of tickets every day, which will manage the flow of visitors in and out of the Park and help minimize traffic impact. It's also important to note that the Museum is a cultural and educational institution that serves the public, which is in keeping with the mission of the Presidio.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 24 2009 @ 3:08PMWhy a Disney museum in San Francisco? What's the connection? I figured they'd want this in Anaheim or Hollywood.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 24 2009 @ 4:24PMFYI - They are not posters for Disney movies. They are posters promoting the various attractions within the Disneyland park, such as Tomorrowland, Frontierland, and the now defunct Skyway cable car ride.
Can't wait to visit this museum.

What I dont get is why they would shut down an area in order to just filled it up again with even more space, hence increasing the amount of traffic and congestion in the area seems like this idea was not well thought out at all.
Posted On: Friday, Sep. 25 2009 @ 8:35AMDoug: "Traffic calming" is not the same as "traffic reduction."
I was invited to one of the WDFM's sneak-peek galas this week and I found it to be fascinating. I think it's a wonderful addition to San Francisco's entertainment/cultural offerings.

Posted On: Friday, Sep. 25 2009 @ 3:02PMJust had a chance to see the museum in person. It was amazing. A must see if you are in the beautiful Presidio area of SF.
Posted On: Saturday, Sep. 26 2009 @ 7:32PMCould someone please tell me why San Francisco was chosen for the museum? My husband says Walt Disney had no particular tie to the city, and he found it a peculiar choice. Personally, it makes me happy as it will be a good reason to get him to visit your wonderful city, (which I have been trying to do for a decade or so!! See ya soon San Francisco!
Posted On: Sunday, Sep. 27 2009 @ 9:08AMThere's no model of Epcot or Pirates Bay, the model is of Disneyland!
Posted On: Sunday, Sep. 27 2009 @ 10:48PMI just visited it today and was duly impressed. It is certainly well done, but it's definitely a museum, not a theme park for younger kids. It's a solid addition to San Francisco's museum repertoire. I wrote a family specific review on it over on trekaroo: http://www.trekaroo.com/activities/walt-disney-family-museum-san-francisco-california?r_id=12492
Posted On: Monday, Sep. 28 2009 @ 1:06AMThe reason its probably in SFO is because Diane Disney Miller lives in wine country, I believe in Napa. I know her and her husband own a winery up there and her husband was very close to WD himself as well. This is one of the few times this family has done something for themselves, that is, have this close to them. I live in L.A., but I'm glad that his legacy is being shared outside of Southern California. As a D23 member, I can guarantee I'll be up there soon to enjoy the museum. Good Luck Disney-Miller family on this endeavour. I wish you the best!!
Posted On: Monday, Sep. 28 2009 @ 8:19PMJust saw a SF local TV news story about this. Disneyʻs family moved to Northern California and operates a winery. Mr Disneyʻs personal belongings were stored in the Presidio prior to any planning of a museum. Family decided open museum here, where Lucasfilm in the Presidio and Pixar across the Bay are located.
Seems it was fitting as the two are the innovators in what Mr. Disney was fascinated about. Mr Disney loved new technology. Pixar credits Mr. Disney as the originator of movie story board as it was what was done in Disneyʻs cartoon movies.
Will his son, Nathaniel, have anything to do with it?
Posted On: Wednesday, Oct. 7 2009 @ 1:35PMSo the daughter lives in the wine country or near San Francisco. Disney's whole life was geared in Hollywood and his final resting place is at Forest Lawn Glendale. If anything The Disney Family Museum should have had its home in Hollywood where all of Disney's genius came to life. This museum is an anachronism it would be like moving the "Lasky-DeMille Barn" to San Francisco because one of the daughter's or grand-children resides in or near San Francisco.
Posted On: Monday, Oct. 12 2009 @ 10:54PMVisited the place last weekend with relatives from out of town. It's all about Walt Disney and what a great guy he was - sort of boring after 10 minutes, relentless and grating after an hour.
I would have been far more interested if you got to see more of his works, instead of all the biography. It's as if a Picasso Museum had lots of snapshots of him at home, but only referred to his paintings in passing....
I definitely would not go again to see the Museum for $20, or even for $5. I might go there to see some old Disney films, but it's pretty pricey for a cinema.
The reason it's in San Francisco is simply that they can get a whole lot of tourists who will pass through at $20 a head, thinking they will get some Disney-brand entertainment. They won't - it's not entertainment, it's a high-tech scrapbook about Walt Disney (they even display his DeMolay membership card).
Also - kids would be profoundly bored.
