endangered Species? : Bottom of the Hill
The ongoing conflict between local all-ages venues Slim's, Café Du Nord, Great American Music Hall and Bottom of the Hill, and state regulating agency ABC has already been covered fairly extensively, ink-wise. But a Current TV-style video clip posted online by 7x7.com adds local faces to the dispute. Slim's co-owner Dawn Holliday notes that the battle has adversely affected venue staff's morale, while Du Nord boss Guy Carson wonders, "why now, when things are hard for so many people?," adding that he's "never had an ABC violation." The two emphasize the issue isn't underage drinking, but what constitutes the legal definition of a restaurant vs. a strictly-entertainment venue. Carson says it all amounts to an imposition of conservative morality on The City (and other parts of California): "if this logic is followed to the end... it's gonna affect culture as we know it," he warns.
