Lilac Alley has been in the news a lot lately thanks to a new addition, a big fancy mural about agriculture and stuff associated with
Mission Pie. And that's great.
I Heart Street Art is thrilled to see people excited about public art, and pie. But whenever I venture down Lilac Alley, it's another piece that gets me. This PE is big and sloppy, and shares few of the qualities with
the PE we gushed about way back in our second week. But it's got heart...
Imagine the surly street artist skulking down a dark alley late one night, and thinking what might be in order is a PE in which the loop of the E lassos a a Master Lock and its attendant latches and handles. Imagine that! Such whimsy! I guess I Heart Street Art is a sucker for works that so deliberately interact with the canvas on which they are thrown up.
Now I'm not saying I don't appreciate the wide variety of stuff on the very vibrant Lilac, or the time and effort that go into some of its more complicated pieces. But neither the loud monstrosity next door nor the Mission Pie commission down yonder will ever hold a candle to Mr. PE, casual and simple and full of life.
