Track of the Day: Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo is one of those bands that fell into a deep slump for a number of years. After sparking the indie rock imagination early on, they released a number of predictable, zzzz-inducing records that made few waves and broke little new ground.

I say all this as a set up to their new single, "Here to Fall," because the song is excellent, and I never would've guessed it came outta this group. KUSF played it this morning, and it's immediately and immensely catchy. The tune is a grand gesture of orchestral psychedelia, almost like a B-side of Beck's Modern Guilt. Yo La Tengo has awoken from the long song coma to take you on a metallic spaceship ride through some feverish stoner dreamstates. Definitely makes me want to hear more--full YLT album, Popular Songs, comes out on Matador September 8.
