Track of the Day: Mayer Hawthorne

He just doesn't love you anymore. Those wedding bells you were hearing? Nah, that was the death knoll of your thing with Mayer Hawthorne. Dude doesn't want you to scream and shout, though; he doesn't want to see you cry. See, he's sorry. It just ain't gonna work out. And when the Los Angeles-via Ann Arbor crooner delivers the dumping stacked (or Stax'd, as it were) with much soul, in that feathery Mayfield falsetto, well, how can you be anything but cool with the news?

Stones Throw's latest signing is a merchant of old fashioned romance, even when he's confessing to selfish ways on "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out."  See, a couple minutes later he's crying into his microphone that he took your love for granted on "When I Said Goodbye." The 29year-old makes tunes his grandparents could've hooked up and broken down over, only slightly tweaked for the modern age with clean production. Fans of Jamie Lidell should check out the new kid on the jukebox, a talented singer with songs for lovers weak, strong, and woozy about the oldies.
