Arriving in my in-box this week is Global Lingo, a new compilation "connecting the world's youth through the universal language of music." Similar to NextAid's Funk Aid for Africa project, Global Lingo's proceeds benefit a good cause: Project Ahimisa, a non-profit dedicated to nonviolence through youth empowerment.

The album features artists from the USA, India, Ghana, Jamaica, Kenya, and Nicaragua, among them several from the Bay Area - reflecting our region's dedication to progressive world music as well as its commitment to consciousness-raising social causes and the global peace movement. In addition to J-Boogie (who joins with LA's Tablapusher and children from Indian NGO Madav Sadhna), Global Lingo's track listing includes Miguel Migs (featuring Junior Reid), Michael Franti & Spearhead, Sila & the Arofunk Experience, Seasunz & Diamond of Art in Action, and two relatively unheralded artists from Oakland's Youth Movement Records: Coco Pelia (whose "Any Day Now" is one of the standout cuts) and Erica Nalani. The entire album is an inspired mix of cultures, musical styles (from hip-hop to reggae to Afrofunk to bhangra to house to acoustic folk), and uplifting, positive messages.

Global Lingo is slated for an August 11 release; for more information, click here.
