Local rock historian Richie Unterberger doesn't do things half-assed. When he dives into a subject for a new book, he comes up for air with an extensive tome on the topic (see The Unreleased Beatles: Music and Film, which spends 400 pages parsing the band's catalog of never distributed material). He's been hard at work on a book about the Velvet Underground for the past couple years, and White Light/White Heat: The Velvet Underground Day By Day is now available for Velvets completists. This Unterberger document is nearly 400 pages as well, with lots of vintage photographs that help tell the rigorously-researched story of the legendary band.

This Wednesday, June 17, Unterberger will host a book party at the Page St. library (1833 Page St., in the Upper Haight) with rare film and audio clips of the band, guest speakers who shared the stage with the Velvet Underground, and a discussion of the vast knowledge he's gleaned about the group. The event is free, and runs from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m.
