On his MySpace page, Mexican singer
Juan Son evokes that old
Clockwork Orange look with his black eye makeup smeared down his face. Play a couple of his songs, however, and his look is far more ominous than his sound--which is a dramatically eclectic take on pop, mixing
Bjork-ian electronics, carnivalesque instrumental flair, and fey subject matter ("Unicorn Puberty" anyone?). His bombastic style is reminiscent in places of
Mew and
Muse, his angst and his ebullience delivered with equal oomph. I can only imagine how all this translates in a live setting--the dude doesn't seem like a stare at his laces kinda performer. Listen to the blossoming electro-orchestral pop of "Captain Whirlpool"
here, and you can see Juan Son live as part of the Convergence MMIX wing of the Mission Creek Music Festival on Saturday, July 18 at the
Blue Macaw.
