One of the things I especially love about the Bay Area hip-hop scene is all the progressive organizations using the urban genre as a catalyst for youth development and education. A short list includes Youth Movement Records, Urban Peace Movement (formerly known as Silence the Violence), Cov Records, OneFam, the DJ Project, YProjects, Grind 4 Tha Green, and Beats, Rhymes & Life .

This Friday, "BRL" celebrates its five-year anniversary with a showcase at the Oakland Metro featuring musical performances by the BRL youth, Crown City Rockers' Raashan Ahmad, DJ Platurn (of the Oakland Faders), Wonway Posibul, DJ Haylow (Distortion 2 Static), and Prince Aries (D2S). The event is the official record release party for Tha Grand Entrance, copies of which will be available at the door, and will also feature a silent auction, an opening reception, an award presentation, and a closing reception. Youth 18 and under will be admitted free, and $10 presales are available here.
