Despite having a name that could set S.F.'s noise nerds in a tizzy, Australia's
Drones are an indie rock band. But they're a damn good one, especially when frontman Gareth Liddiard is unwinding one of his heavily accented, highly tortured yowls over a mess of noisy guitar riffage. (Think an early, slightly less evil Nick Cave). But the man has mellowed slightly with newer releases, throwing some folksy jingles (and pop jangle) into the mix. Check out the song "Your Acting's Like the End of the World"
here--a song that starts mellow, but becomes, like much of the Drones' excellent catalog, a boozy drinking song before too long. The Drones will be here April 17 opening for
Band of Horses at
the Fox (it seems like
just yesterday that they were at Bottom of the Hill).
