Track of the Day: John Vanderslice

After recently pulling off a big celebration for his Tiny Telephone Studios' tenth birthday, local music man John Vanderslice is returning to the spotlight with a new record, Romanian Names. Vanderslice stepped away from the official studio for this one and went into his basement to sketch out the material that would become the 12 songs on the upcoming LP. The first single off Romanian Names, "Fetal Horses," comes with a kinda gruesome title (I picture those carnival fetuses in jars when I see the name) and the lyrics are no less creepy-- images of bloody, pixilated faces; lovers who will "break everything I had" and "turn a hanging man bad." Set against a simple piano melody, though, these words are less violent aggressions and more sorrowful asides from a man who admits he stole his lady from another man. Give the track a spin here.
