Lisa Shaw, Miguel Migs, Julius Papp Get 'Free'
|Divalicious: Lisa Shaw|
You've gotta love electronic music divas. They've got an edgy fierceness you won't often find in mainstream soul and R&B, and they can belt it out with the best of them. Though they're often overshadowed by the producers they work with, they put the "deep" in deep house. Plus, they're sexy as hell.
Case in point: Lisa Shaw . Best known for her work with Bicoastal house tastemakers Naked Music, her sinuous pipes effortlessly handle downtempo, house, and soul with a fluid smoothness which provides much needed texture and contrast to bass-heavy club bangers. Shaw's 2005 debut solo album Cherry earned praise as a sophisticated, well-rounded effort which effectively showcased the full range of her talents, breaking her out of the house vocalist box. Her latest solo album, Free (released March 20th) finds her with a new label, SF-based Salted, but otherwise in classic form. It's a testament to Shaw's reputation and talent that some big-name DJs will be on the decks for her album release party Saturday night at Mighty: none other than Miguel Migs and Julius Papp, who collectively have been some of the West Coast's most consistent dancefloor gods since the early '90s. This isn't cheese-whiz house, but something closer to brie.
