Dancehall Originator: Ranking Joe
Old-school reggae fans, take note: Legendary Jamaican toaster (aka deejay) Ranking Joe appears tonight at Berkeley's Shattuck DownLow Lounge. Joe first rose to prominence in the '70s, when he recorded for Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label, Sly & Robbie's Taxi label, and U-Roy's Stur-Gav sound system; in the early and mid-80s he became popular in the UK. One of the originators of the modern dancehall style, he's enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, beginning with the release of Zion High on the Blood+Fire label in 2002.

Tonight's show at the DL is a birthday celebration for DJ Riddm. Also appearing are DJs Smokey, Beatnok, Kool Kyle, B-Love, and Silverback. Tickets are just $10 before eleven p.m.
