One of my favorite local(-ish, he's based in Monterrey) promoters is (((folkYEAH!))). Under that name, music fan Britt Govea has brought a host of freak folk, heavy drone, psych rock, and the like to the Fernwood and the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur -- as well as concerts in the Santa Cruz Mountains at the Brookdale Lodge, and a handful of SF. The Big Sur events are legendary in California for good reason, attracting folks up from LA and down from SF to gather around campfires, hotel rooms, the back porch of the bar, and in the main lodge for a long weekend of wine and song (main attractions have ranged from Jenny Lewis to Bonnie Prince Billy to Neil Young's wife Pegi Young).
Now there's a documentary coming out on the scene, Festival in the Forest featuring performances from such esteemed locals as Fresh & Onlys, Sleepy Sun, and Citay along with nationally acclaimed artists the Silver Jews, Megapuss (Devendra Banhart's newest band), and the Entrance Band.
The film screens for the first time this week down at SXSW. Hopefully we'll get a chance to view the natural/sonic merger of hippies and hipsters (there's a bond in those beards) 'round these parts soon.
