Three Masterminds Winners Named: Use That $2,500 Wisely, Kids!

Ten Bay Area artists showed off their work at SF Weekly's Artopia event last night at the Project One gallery in hopes of winning a $2,500 grant as part of our annual Masterminds contest. Unfortunately, we couldn't give all 10 grants -- our esteemed panel of judges from the editorial department could only pick three. It wasn't easy. I think everyone who came to the event saw what a strong group of artists were competing for that money.
In the end, we wanted to pick one representative from each of the three categories: film/video/media art; fashion/design; visual art. With all that in mind, here are this year's winners (after the jump):
Jose Montesinos (Film)
We loved his trailer for Hell's Kittens, which reminded us of Russ Meyer's cult classic, Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! At the event last night, Jose was also showing off a trailer for a crime movie he says is almost done; he just needs to shoot one more scene. We hope the $2,500 grant will help him finish that film and get it some play on the festival circuit.

Russo impressed us with his creative re-use of old crap he finds on Craigslist's free stuff section. On display last night was his "Un-tie" chair made up a wood frame and old ties. Hey, here he is sitting in it!

Anastasia Winter Schipani (Visual Art)
Schipani's textile creations pop with color and creativity. The Art Institute alum is obsessed with matadors and bulls and their death fights, which may sound grim, but the rich hues in her work show a strong streak of optimism. We hope this grant will keep her looking on the bright side.

Finally, we'd like to thank everyone who submitted entries this year, especially the ten artists who were kind enough to haul their work down to Project One last night. You helped make this a great event.
