On Friday night John Vanderslice performs with the Magik*Magik 30 piece orchestra to celebrate 10 years of his local recording studio Tiny Telephones. The opportunity to see Vanderslice with an assortment of violins, cellos and violas is not to be missed. Aesop Rock will DJ before and after. The show starts at 9pm at the Great American Music Hall and tickets are $14. (If you can't make it, check All Shook Down tomorrow for the skinny.)
For lovers of theatre, modern dance and progressive politics, head to Mission Dance Theatre for Uncovered: The Diary Project. Sean Dorsey's beautiful piece interprets the diaries of San Francisco trans activist Lou Sullivan into a theatrical dance piece with spoken word. Many of the performances are already sold out, but another has been added. If you're in the East Bay, visit Good Vibrations Berkeley for a reading of the Best Sex Writing and will host a signing.
Wanna dance? Both Friday and Saturday night DJ Amos Tobin will help you get your groove on at the Independent. Show starts at 9 and tickets are $23. Los Angeles psych rock band West Indian Girl do their thang Saturday night at the Bottom of the Hill in lovely Potrero Hill. San Francisco bands Loquat and the Love X Nowhere open. The show starts at 10 pm and is 18+.
Sunday is the Superbowl. Eat chips and dip, drink beer, and all that jazz. OR protest the idolization of athletes, the junkfood industry and consumerism by doing something else. It's up to you.
And that's the weekend hitlist.
