Hey DJ! Friday Q&A: Green B

Categories: Q&A

Is it easy being Green? In the case of DJ Green B, we'd have to say yes. The positive-thinking Boston transplant has been broadcasting her love for Jamaican music (and deep bass) from the Mission to the Western Addition and Potero Hill. She says that although dudes are still surprised to see a woman behind the decks, the Bay Area's hot with female DJs spinning her favorite styles, from reggae and dancehall to hiphop. More on this great Green mind below....

Name: Green B aka Beverly

Club night(s): Coo-Yah! Wednesdays @ Bruno's, One Love 2nd Fridays @ Poleng Lounge,  Church on Sundays @ Il Pirata

Style(s) of music you spin: Reggae/Dancehall

How you got your start: My love for the music...and a selfish desire to hear my favorite tunes..haha! My crew in Boston -- where I lived for 10 years before landing in S.F. -- were deep into reggae music. I'd see them perform on the regular: The Joint Chiefs, a dope roots band, and my absolute favorite, The Pressure Cooker, an amazing rocksteady/ska band. My boys collected all the hot 7-inches coming out of JA...which kept me wanting more! Anything from Digital B, Jammys, or the Taxi Gang...It was the release of Buju Banton's 'Til Shiloh that sealed the deal.

By the late 90's I was enamored: collecting records, scoring mix CDs, and hitting all the stage shows and festivals in Boston, NY, & Miami. The thought of being a DJ wasn't quite on the radar...but when I moved out to SF in 02, my good friend lent me her Technics & two-channel Vestax, and well, there ya have it.

What's your favorite place to DJ and why?
I love DJing anywhere with a good sound system!  Every time the bass is bumping and the crowd is moving, I am in heaven. Il Pirata on Sundays..BOOM SOUND.

Name of a track you can't get out of your head: Dennis Brown's "Stop the Fussing & Fighting:" it's always in my head..must be the times.

Favorite DJ experience: When folks peep the DJ booth and do a double-take (not expecting a woman) usually followed by a fist-tap.

Strangest situation where you've been asked to DJ:
I'll let ya know when it happens..

What's your take on the female DJ scene in San Francisco? Are there enough ladies behind the decks? There are a slew of hot female DJs in the bay and they all rock! DJ Zita & Pam the Funktress started B.A.S.S. (Bay Area Sistas in Sound) which pops-off every first Saturday @ 330 Rich featuring a different female guest. If you like some bumping hip-hop these  ladies bring it!  I have also been lucky to play with Jenicyde, Mama-L, Neta, & Donette-G, all damn good lady selectas. Watch out for The Faded Twins bubblin up...There is a ton of love in the Bay, and plenty of room for more women to step-up. I was blessed to team up with DJ Daneekah and start Coo-Yah! Wednesdays, and together we have created a bumping weekly, with a loyal following and great vibes.

Worst request: It's always something a thousand times slower or faster then what I'm playing at the moment...

Most treasured vinyl score:
Still looking! There's this Jesse Jendau tune, "Strong Black Woman"...please! anyone?

What can you tell us about your mix CD series?
The series is called Pure Niceness, kinda says it all. Always a blend of new roots & culture tunes to keep you smiling and singing every time you press play. Volume 3 was bootlegged and sold as "Tony Matterhorn's Culture Mix," which was flattering since he is a HUGE Jamaican DJ.

Musical mantra: NEW MUSIC!! When it comes to reggae/dancehall, the island of Jamaica and beyond is overflowing with talent and new music! I make it a point to keep my sets up to di time!

Question we didn't ask you but  you often ask yourself:
Who's my favorite artist at the moment? In 2002 it had to be Sizzla..in 2009 its Busy Signal!

What other music-related projects are you currently working on?
Besides the never-ending mix CD's and podcasts (greenb.podomatic.com), finding a new venue to throw a hot   dancehall monthly, somewhere fresh like my weekly.

Next time we can see you spin:
Tonight @ Poleng and every wednesday @ Coo-Yah!
