Two Gallants, Q-Bert and Laughing Squid's Unholiday Party: Your Monday Morning Hangover

Weekend recap by Janine Kahn

We're shaking ourselves out of holiday lethargy here on All Shook Down, and we'll be alive-alert-awake-enthusiastic (OK, maybe "sober" is a more accurate term) through Wednesday afternoon. We've a lot planned for New Year's Eve, but before we get ahead of ourselves, here's a brief look back at some of the events we managed to break away from crazy relatives long enough to cover over the weekend:

On Friday, Sam Prestianni headed to the Fillmore to see darkish indie duo Two Gallants, an experience he says was probably better than "banging heroin while watching It's a Wonderful Life for the 7th time in a row." (We failed to ask him just how he knew this.) The venue was packed with old friends and longtime fans, and much singing-along ensued.

"Make that the Universe's best DJ. Though he claims to be from Daly City, there have long been suspicions that Richard Quitevis, aka Q-Bert, is in fact an extraterrestrial being. Q's otherworldly turntable skills and schwa-like facial features have done little to dispel this notion; if he's actually a visiting Venusian who pals around with Klaatu and has a interstellar scraper with a sick-ass sound system featuring subatomic subwoofers, it wouldn't surprise anyone who's followed his career since the early '90s."

We really dug the jellyfish lamps (pictured) and wish we could install a couple over our China Basin cubicle.

2008-12-26-Cal-MU-031-RS-PShoot-thumb-400x309.jpgAlso on Saturday: Joe Eskenazi caught the Emerald Bowl at AT&T Park. We're not much for games that involve only one ball, but we did enjoy the photos of daredevils parachuting onto the 50-yard line.

Read Joe's review over at our sister blog, The Snitch.
