MP3 of the Day: James Blackshaw

(James Blackshaw)
British guitarist James Blackshaw makes incredible acoustic songs inspired by minimalist composers and the classical music of his homeland. He's a modern day John Fahey, repeating and building on hypnotic melodies that are complex to create yet easy on the ears. He's teamed up with lutenist/composer Jozef van Wissem to form another act, Brethren of the Free Spirit (named, according to their label's Web site, "after a cult of 13th-century Northern European religious heretics"), and the pair recently released The Wolf Shall Also Dwell With The Lamb on Important Records. Check out the title track and "Into the Dust of the Earth", both of which contain a bit of modern fingerpicking meets Medieval magic. -- Jennifer Maerz
