The Lowbrow Art Sale: John Brophy, James Jean & Chris Peters
John Brophy "Madonna and Horsefly"
Roq La Rue Gallery has a new print from Washington-based artist John Brophy. The piece is on heavy watercolor stock, 10 3/4″x 13 1/4″with a paper size of 13 1/4″x 15 3/4″. It is signed and numbered in an edition of only 10. I absolutely love John’s work, and I hope to be able to see at least one of his paintings in person one day. I love how this particular work looks like an underpainting -- it glows and has this really dynamic quality to it. I don’t think this print will last long at all. As I write this there are only 8 prints left.

James Jean "Maze"
The always amazing (and always welcome in these articles) James Jean has released a new print: a generous 17" x 22", signed and embossed on cotton rag paper. His prints are amazing, so I know this one has to be outstanding in person. I really love the colors, and the texture that he gets with those paints is killer. His prints are open edition, so no rush, but might as well get some great art for your walls. Get It Here.
Chris Peters "To Hold You Again"
Chris Peters has just opened up a new store area on his website and is launching the new section with three new giclee prints. Each one is on fine velvet art paper using Ultrachrome k3 inks. These are the same kind of inks that James Jean and, I believe, Chet Zar are using, so it’s clear that this is a great way of making prints. The piece shown is 22" x 17", signed and numbered in an edition of 100. Get It Here.
Michael Shapcott "The Crow"
The last time I featured a print from this artist was back in February. Well his store is filled with prints now, it just took me too long to talk about them. The one featured here was one of two works that he made for the "Identity Theft" show, where each artist re-interpreted a comic book character. I've always loved the Crow and I think he did a great job with this one; it has that feel that you would expect to go along with this comic title. Get It Here.
Silent Giants "Sigur Ros"
The Sigur Ros show is coming up this weekend at the Greek Theater, so I thought it would be cool to feature a print for the band. I have no clue what will be offered at the show, hopefully this time they aren't all dinged up. This poster is made by Silent Giants, a design group out of Michigan. The print is 18" x 24" hand screened on 100lb Speckletone Starch Rain (Silver Metallic Ink), in an edition of 125. The great thing is the print is only $20, can't beat that. Get It Here.
