MTT Alert: See Michael Conduct Lenny Before New York Does!

Categories: Music

eif-mtt.jpgLeonard Bernstein’s 90th birthday was August 25th, and a slew of celebrations across the country are scheduled to celebrate it.

Our own Michael Tilson Thomas, heir apparent in many ways to Bernstein as a conductor and music educator, conducts an all-Bernstein program on September 17, 18, and 19 at Davies Symphony Hall. The eclectic program includes symphonic dances from West Side Story, songs from West Side Story, On the Town, Songfest, and the short opera Trouble in Tahiti scenes from A Quiet Place, the 1983 sequel to Trouble in Tahiti, the Meditation No. 1 from his Mass, and Danzon from the ballet Fancy Free, with dancers.

Vocalists include Stephanie Harwood, Quinn Kelsey, and Dawn Upshaw. The same program is scheduled to be the Opening Night Gala of New York City’s Carnegie Hall’s 118th season (as well as the first event of its three-month Bernstein: The Best of all Possible Worlds celebration), but you can hear it here first. Don’t miss one handsome charismatic Jewish boy conducting the work of another, with passion and insight. --Meredith Brody
