Hey DJ! Friday Q&A: DJ MyKill

Say DJ MyKill's name fast and you get where the guy got his moniker (hint: his real name is Michael). The Phoenix transplant has been making a name for himself getting revelers drunk and dancing on Sunday nights with a big ol' French Kiss at the Mission club Pink. Below MyKill spills more than the pastel-hued shots, including the lowdown on one dude who displayed his naughty bits a little too close to the turntables.

Name: Michael Clark (DJ MyKill)

Club night(s): I do a weekly party at Pink with my good friend Forever 21 called French Kiss. The night started in Phoenix a few years ago and I brought the concept with me when I moved to the city in 2007. I'm also a part time resident at Beauty Bar and play there when they need me. My time is usually spent DJing in and around the Bay Area with the occasional out of town show.

Style(s) of music you spin: What don't I spin would be a much shorter list. But let's see, I'm really pushing a lot of newer electro and indie stuff that is coming out right now, as well as French House, Baltimore club, UK fidget, mash ups, hip hop/pop remixes, and straight up party jams to get the collective asses shaking. I'm also a fan of 80's funk and soul as well as italo and disco sounds. There isn't much I won't play.

What's the best way to get people to come out on a school night? Free booze! That always seems to work, it's why we offer a free Pink shot to every guest who comes in to French Kiss (plug plug ). But seriously, you have to offer something different when trying to attract a crowd that has class in the morning. The free/cheap drinks just helps them forget about their responsibilities.

What's the craziest thing that's happened at one of your club nights? I've seen a lot of crazy things over the past 12 years of my DJ career. I think one of the craziest was an incident many years ago at an outdoor rave. I was playing on a main stage when a random drugged out kid thought it would be a great idea to strip down naked and get on stage while I was playing. I'm in the middle of a mix and I'm trying not to stare at his naughty bits as he comes up to the DJ booth and proceeds to stop the record playing. I'm of course shouting for security. None were around and a group of people had to remove him from the stage. Haven't had any repeats of that yet, but I'm sure it's bound to happen again someday.

Name of a track you can't get out of your head? Every day it's something new. Today it's probably French Horn Rebellion's "Up All Night." It has such a fun, catchy synth line that I've been humming all day long. Ask me again tomorrow and I'm sure that will change.

Dream DJ partner: Wow, I never gave this much thought.DJing isn't usually like being in a band, it's not like you dream of "jamming" out with some rock star on the tables. I guess that's why you get into DJing in the first place, because you are control freak and don't work well with others. Haha. jk. For the sake of the question I'll just say Lindsay Lohan.

Favorite DJ experience: Anytime the crowd sings, cheers, claps along,,jumps up and down, spills beer on the decks, screams, shouts, blows kisses, buys me shots, and doesn't request some horrible song I don't feel like playing, then it's a good night!

Worst request: Crazy, it's like you guys read my mind. Requests really should never be made, but if you feel you must, you have a better chance at getting your song played if a) it doesn't suck (this one is subjective) and b) you give the DJ some $$$.

Most treasured vinyl score: I used to a be a junkie with this stuff. I spent way too much money on out of print/hard to find records and now look at me, I'm selling my turntables and haven't played vinyl in years. I'd say one of my biggest scores was an old white label from the rave scene days called Brown Acid. Supposedly there were only 100 of these pressed and I was quite shocked that I'd even stumbled upon it.

Musical mantra: Thou Shalt Always Kill

Any other projects you currently have in the works? I'm in the middle of producing some original music, doing remixes and edits for others, and I'm about to start putting more stuff out there very soon.

Question we didn't ask you but you often ask yourself: How many drink tickets do I get again?

Next time we can see you spin: I'm at the Beauty Bar a lot this next month. Plus a few random gigs like Sucker Punch at the Transfer and Smut at Anu. You can check my myspace page for a full listing of upcoming appearances. http://www.myspace.com/djmykillmusic
