222 Club to Close Oct. 1

(222 Club's employees, via the bar's MySpace page)
Fans of Tenderloin hotspot 222 Club (222 Hyde St.) might have to take their parties elsewhere soon. Owners Bianca Kaplan and her husband Joe have sold the venue, which has been home to nights by many of San Francisco's top ranking DJs (Sleazemore, Richard Oh!, Claude Von Stroke, Ryan Poulsen, Jefrodesiac, and Omar, to name a few). The bar has also hosted touring acts, afterparties with guest DJs (like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and regular gigs like its popular Tuesday night parties. After five years of owning the space, though, Bianca Kaplan says she's ready for a change of neighborhood. "Everyone's really sad," she told me, "but we're ready to move on." She's working on setting up a new club, hinting that the space may be "somewhere in the Mission." New owners have bought the 222 space, but Kaplan doesn't know what sort of vibe, or DJ nights, they'll want at the club. She's also not sure when the doors to 222 will re-open. To get a sense of just how beloved the Hyde St. mainstay has become, check out all the comments on the club's MySpace page, where loyal attendees are making posts like "Soo sad but true....THE END OF AN ERA." (Thanks to Clubs Editor John Graham for the tip). -- Jennifer Maerz
