Sunday: Rock Make Street Festival

Tree with a view on Treat Street.

Notes and Photos by Janine Kahn

Though I only managed to catch the tail end of it, the Mission's first ever Rock Make Street Fest appeared to be a smashing success. Under the impression that the Sunday edition of Outside Lands would be likely to steal the smaller indie rock festival's thunder, I was mildly surprised (and well, pleased) to see scores of hipster types sitting on the Treat Street pavement, bobbing their heads to local music makers Maus Haus. An even larger crowd flocked to the opposite end of the block half an hour later, some even climbing into a tree (pictured), to better appreciate Tartufi's wailing vocals.

The homemade trinkets for sale were an etsyphile's wet dream. What, with a colorful assortment of handmade dresses and totes, prints and accessories - and no shipping charges! Though the distressed owl greeting cards and leather purses were tempting, I spent most of my time at Cheri Lewis's "Mama's Little Babies" booth, which featured vintage prints-turned-jewelry.

I'd seen wearable vintage illustration pieces online before - but Paraphernalia's older etsy store shipped out of the UK, so it was nice to see someone relatively local take the art and run with it.

Vintage illustration jewelry. Oh so hard to choose from.

Lewis's pieces turned out to be cheaper on her website, I learned and lamented the $30 I'd spent as I put away the goldfish necklace I'd picked up (similar pieces went for $22 online). But gas ain't cheap and she did come from Santa Cruz, some 70 miles away, so I couldn't be too pissed about the mark-up.

Other things I liked:

"Adult Tutus," pictured above.

Caitlin Kuhwald's art, which was printed in card sets.

Doubleparlour prints and sculptures.

Cute people in cute outfits with cute doggies in equally cute outfits.
