MP3 of the Day: The Drones

Despite the name, Australia's the Drones don't create gently humming music. Instead they perform like their songs are barbed torture devices being dragged from deep inside their bodies. Like Nick Cave and the Dirty Three before them, the Drones turn high emotional drama into loud instrumental drama, with singer Gareth Liddiard howling like he'll never escape the bender he's barreling down. At CMJ a couple years back this Melbourne act was one of my favorites, and I'm excited to see they'll be returning to the States to perform in the cozy Hemlock showroom on Thursday, Aug. 28. For a little taste of their sonic tyranny, check out our MP3 of the Day, "Baby Squared" -- Jennifer Maerz
