Red Devil Lounge
Better Than: Wallowing in sadness
Notes and photos by Tyler Callister
I believe that music really can change the world -- one sweat-drenched club at a time. I believe music is the great cosmic camera and the only thing fit to capture the hugeness of tiny moments. I believe that most problems can be remedied with laughter and dancing. I believe that preshow nervous tickle in your stomach is a good thing. I believe in bad flash photography, oversized shoes, cheap wine, and the sublime silliness of it all.
I also believe that last night was the first time I've ever seen an audience gleefully chant, "Chicks with dicks! Chicks with dicks!"
That was the spirit that coursed through the Red Devil Lounge last night as The Ant Show presented five bands - The B-Cups (who got us chanting the aforementioned phrase), Sexx (yes with two x's and lot's of sexual antics), The Lipstick Conspiracy (tranny rockers), Goodbye Gadget (local pop punk with cool keyboards), and She Keep Bees (great blues rock from Brooklyn).
This marks the second time we here at All Shook Down have covered The Ant Show anniversary. As we learned last year, The Ant Show is a local band showcase that began as an every-Tuesday staple at the now-defunct Studio Z, but lives on as a roaming concert series. The showcase has helped kick start the careers of notable locals like LoveLikeFire and Scissors For Lefty.
While the crowd was modest at first, by the time Sexx came on and whipped out a generous helping of kissing, humping, and gyrating, the crowd had loosened up. Other show highlights included She Keeps Bees' striking songwriting and The B-Cups loving tribute to crack whores.

And at the center of this Ant's nest, in a radiant red and black dress, was the founder of The Ant Show, the MC, the local music legend, the devoted maestro of nostalgia, Tin Fan.
Fan, who's spent much of her life as a booker and promoter in and outside of the Bay Area, directed the crowd through the night, giving sexy banter and inciting lot's of dancing. Fan has brought together a large social network of local bands over the last four years so the place was packed with friends of her and the Ant Show. By the end of the night Fan had filled the stage with about a dozen local musicians who sang happy birthday to The Ant Show and sliced into the official Ant Show cake.
As for the rest of the scene, I guess a picture's worth a thousand words.
Critic's Notebook
Personal Bias: I had an ant farm when I was a kid.
By The Way: The Ant Show has another show next week, same time, same place.
Check out a couple of the bands for next week:
